Skamania County consists of 1,672 square miles of the most scenic and diverse landscape in the world. We have the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Mt. Adams Wilderness and an abundance of backcountry and wilderness areas in which to enjoy the great outdoors. |

|
Skamania County also faces a variety of hazards, both natural and manmade. Mount Saint Helens' current volcanic activity reminds us all of the power of nature, and of the critical need to be prepared as individuals and communities. The seismic hazard in the region is significant. The geologic record is filled with such events, including ones of serious magnitude. The Cascadia Subduction Zone represents a catastrophic earthquake/tsunami potential... The Columbia River Gorge is a major transportation corridor. Barge traffic plies the water of the Columbia, with I-84 and railways on the southern banks, and State Hwy 14 and another railway on the northern side, all accomodating hazardous material transportation. The "Gorge" is very succeptible to winter storm closures, and land/rock slides may occur any time of the year, making very important for all to be prepared to be isolated for extended periods of time. It is everyone's responsibility to be prepared! |
